The Best Dressed According to Anferne | VMAs 2022 / by Anferne Ortiz

When it comes to the VMAs there are three things most of us think about: risk-taking fashion, unforgettable moments, and (Britney’s) iconic performances. And even though most of us would agree that the VMAs glory era is in the past, the legendary awards show still continues to give us daring fashionable moments, and right now that’s what I want to talk about – Anferne’s favorite looks from the 2022 VMAs (and more importantly who they all wore!)

Sofia Carson in Carolina Herrera

Sofia wore an elegant and alluring Carolina Herrera gown with an exaggerated hood, integrated sleeves, a peek-a-boo sheer sweetheart neckline, and a straight-cut floor-length skirt. She accessorized her look with gorgeous statement starburst earrings. Sofia is a girlie I can never get enough of, she is one of my favorite girls on the red carpet, EVER, and I cannot wait to see her grow in Hollywood. She is going to be one of the MAIN girlies in the business, I just know it! PURR!

Lizzo in Jean Paul Gaultier Couture

Listen, every time I can identify with an artist in terms of body–well not really because I don't have a big booty nor can I twerk as amazingly as Lizzo–and they KILL it on the fashion front, is always a thumbs-up from me. Miss ‘bye bitch.. *cackle*’ Lizzo wore a dramatic Jean-Paul Gaultier Couture off-the-shoulder ballgown and finished off her look with sheer opera-length gloves and Jennifer Fisher jewelry. A  STUNNER.

Sabrina Carpenter in Moschino

Sabrina the Disney-born songstress, dazzled in a groovy Moschino halter neck gown with daring cut-outs and bubbly florals in full sequin. She topped her look with a padded headband that truly matched her vibe. I loved EVERYTHING about this and I know y’all did too!

Lil Nas X in Harris Reed & Marko Monroe from House of Avalon

Lil Nas X knows how to show up and show out! He demanded everyone's attention (as he should) arriving in a Harris Reed feathered concoction featuring a dramatic headpiece and matching exposed tiered caged skirt. Later on inside the show, he graced the VMA stage by accepting an award in a cut-out gown featuring 2,000 hand-placed metal rings by Marko Monroe from House of Avalon. Montero really snapped with this one.

Chloe Flower in Celine

I am not too familiar with Chloe Flower however, I’m picking up what she’s putting down because she looked adorable, and I do not understand why I haven't seen people talk about this VMA look. Like, are y’all blind? First of all, I love the silhouette she created. Chloe wore an off-the-shoulder polka dot mini with an oversized bow and integrated sleeves by Celine. She finished slaying in a cute pillbox hat and sick platforms. SLAY.

Conan Gray in Harris Reed

Conan is basically an it-boy right now and his fashion sense has been something I look forward to seeing from the second I discovered him. Conan did not disappoint, he stayed true to his style in a dreamy overcoat with sheer lace train paired with high-waisted flare trousers by Harris Reed. He continued the serve with kick-ass Marc Jacobs platform boots and vintage lace gloves by Lidow Archive. Toot!

Rosé from BlackPink in Saint Laurent

Let's get real the ladies of BlackPink can turn out a look like no one's business, but last night Rosé took the cake, imo! She ATE in a Saint Laurent mini with a high mock neckline, long sleeves, and sash tie that sat at the hips with applique detail. Rosé kept it simple with black pumps and minimal accessories. It gave what it needed to give.

Taylor Swift in Oscar de la Renta

Taylor’s version of slaying the VMAs came in the form of a striking embellished mini from Oscar de la Renta with a halter neckline and carefully draped chains of jewels that blinded me every time the light hit them. She kept it glam with a bold red lippie, and heels that just tied her whole look together. Diamonds are Taylor’s best friends. Scooter can keep the rhinestones.

Chloe Bailey in Zigman

Chloe Bailey and her sister, Halle, always know how to hit the red carpet. At this years VMAs Chloe came to slay (alone) in a Zigman gown with structural detailing and flattering cut-outs, a sweetheart neckline, and a high slit that was cut for her by the slit gods themselves (using The Fates’ scissors.) She’s never a zero, always a SHERO.

Ethan Torchio from Måneskin in Gucci

Ethan gave me everything I would want from a rockstar and more. In a sheer corset top, and sleek trousers from Gucci he came after my Supermodel heart. He completed the look with studded leather gloves, matching wide belt, and western-style heeled boots. Glam rock will NEVER die. Oh, and frontman Damiano David gets a special mention because his stage look was EVERYTHING. Come on assless chaps!

Becky G in Zuhair Murad

After dancing in the mirror and singing in the shower, Becky G graced the VMAs in a shimmering tarot card-inspired gown by Zuhair Murad featuring ladder cut-outs throughout the side that ran almost the entire length of the gown. She concluded the reading in flawless makeup and mirrored heels. Her future is a bright one, it’s in the cards.

Tate McRae in Niné

Tate McRae was one of the pre-show hosts and she looked like a hottie straight from the 2000s in a matching ensemble from Niné! She stepped up her look with sultry strappy heels and clean glowy make-up. To me, she definitely evoked Britney vibes, because let’s face it Britney IS the VMAs. It was a moment, she understood the assignment!

And The Moon Person Goes To

All of my nominees served what they needed to serve, and we all ate it up. And if you’re like me, we didn't leave any crumbs. My absolute favorite of the night was… let me preface this by saying it was a very tough call… but the Moon person goes to Sofia Carson in Carolina Herrera, she really took my breath away. She has cemented her personal style into everything she does and she knows exactly what to do, and how to do it. Remember this is according to ME! But tell me, do you agree? Or better yet, who were your faves of the night? Chime in down in the comments, or as always – in my dms!
